Workshop series on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals - Sustainable cities and communities

It is estimated that 70% of the total world population will live in cities by 2050. To accommodate for an increasing world population and the increasing influx of people into cities, we need intelligent and sustainable urban planning to create safe, affordable and resilient cities. Not only in terms of a healthy, wealthy population, but we also need to include the more exposed population groups. However, in many of these cities the urbanisation growth is too rapid, leading to a rise in slums, urban sprawl, increased air pollution and limited open public spaces. Many cities are also vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters. Out of the current 17 world megacities, 14 are located in coastal areas. In order to create cities that are adapted for the future, what do we need to consider? And what can we learn from the tools we already possess?
Inspirational speakers are:
- David Andréen (Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering): Nature-based solutions in architectural production, and how digitalization of design and fabrication is enabling new modes of engaging creating a more sustainable construction industry. David Andréen - Lund University.
- Roxana Ciurean (British Geological Survey, United Kingdom): Urban geohazard resilience using a systems analysis approach. Roxana Ciurean - British Geological Survey.
- Steven Schmidt (Applied Gerontology & CASE, Faculty of Medicine): What is a sustainable city from the perspective of older adults? Steven Schmidt - Lund University.
